Do you know? We sure don't! So why act like we do? We don't know is created by a group of high school students who decided to add this topic to the website to help answer your questions.

We will use the resources at the Aromas Library to research your questions. The library is a great place for special programs, to use for research and just a great atmosphere to be in.

Our September topic is how to get a driver permit. Read the article below to help you get past those confusing regulations. Good luck!

Drivers License and Permit Regulations
by Caroline

When I first called the DMV about getting my driver permit, I was so confused about all the rules and classes to take that I kept
the poor operator on the phone for an hour. This article is for all you other new drivers who are completely befuddled about the law for teen drivers.

  • Driver education is the class you take where you learn all the traffic laws. You can opt to take this class online, at home with a booklet, or in an actual class with a teacher.
  • Driver training is the training you get with a certified driving instructor behind the wheel.
  • When you get your permit, you need to wait at least 6 months and you must have turned 16 before you can take your drivers license test.
  • The permit test is 46 questions and you must get 39 right to pass. If you fail, you need to wait a week before you can take it again. You have 3 chances to pass.
  • The drivers license test is behind the wheel. There will be an examiner from the DMV in the car with you to judge your driving. If you fail, you must wait 2 weeks to take it again. You have 3 chances to pass.

If you are:

15-15 1/2
This is the youngest age you can apply for a driver permit. If you are under 15 1/2 when you go to get your permit, you must take a driver education class and be enrolled in driver training. You don't have to complete driver training but be enrolled in it. You have to show your driver education certificate and drivers training enrollment certificate. Your permit is not valid until you have completed one of three classes with your drivers training instructor. Now here's the confusing part: once you take your first class with your driving instructor, you can practice driving with an adult 25 years or older. However, your permit is good for one year from the date you pass your permit test at the DMV, not the date you take your first class. So, I recommend that you try to get your permit around the time you take your first class. Plan ahead!

15 1/2- 17 1/2
You need to complete driver education and have the certificate to take the permit test. You do ultimately need to take 3 classes with a instructor before you take your license test, but you can practice driving with your permit before you take those classes.

17 1/2-18
You can get your permit without the drivers education certificate but you do need to take education and training before you can take your drivers license test.
