Second Harvest Food Bank
By Kathy Roy

This time of year, many of us that garden have an embarrassment of riches. Whether it is the ubiquitous zucchini, or overzealous tomatoes, peppers, corn or onions, many of us have more than we can eat or share with our neighbors.

Instead of leaving zucchini on your unsuspecting neighbor’s doorstep, why not give it to someone who would appreciate the bounty of your garden?

Second Harvest Food Bank accepts fresh fruit and vegetables in addition to the traditional canned food. Fruit and vegetables should be clean, and in good condition, the same quality you would use to feed yourself or your family.

Because of storage requirements, not all Second Harvest Food Banks can accept fresh fruit and vegetables. If you are considering a donation from your garden, be sure to call ahead and make sure that the facility can properly store your precious fresh bounty.

One local facility that can accept fresh fruit and vegetables is the Second Harvest Food Bank located at 15 Errington Road in Watsonville. For more information or directions to their facility, call them at (831) 722-7110. Or visit their web site at www.thefoodbank.org.

For information on other nearby Second Harvest Food Bank facilities visit their web site at www.secondharvest.org.

Next year, why not participate in the Plant a Row for the Hungry program sponsored by
The Garden Writers Association of America (GWAA)? Started in 1995, Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR) has recorded over 1,000,000 pounds of donated fresh fruit and vegetables. Learn more about the Plant a Row for the Hungry program by visiting the GWAA web site at www.gwaa.org/par/index.html.
